APRIL 2023

From the directors

Dear friends and colleagues,

We hosted a powerful 21CSLA Research-Practice webinar this week that focused on leading — and healing — across political divides. UCLA Professor John Rogers presented his research from Educating Toward a Multiracial Democracy in California, and Kelly Bowers (former Livermore Joint Valley Superintendent) and Mauro Bautista (Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez High School Principal) shared their experiences of grappling with divisiveness and finding ways forward in California’s “purple” districts.

Professor Rogers ended the webinar with a lofty and inspiring quote from W. E. B. Du Bois about a more hopeful future made possible by a “vital, gigantic effort” to realize “real education for the broadest intelligence and for evoking talent and genius on a scale never attempted in the world.” In his words are the promise and the power of our schools for making connections and overcoming division to lift us all.

Warmly,

Dr. Rebecca Cheung Director, 21CSLA State Center
Dr. Jabari Mahiri Chair, 21CSLA Leadership Board
Dr. Kim Wallace Associate Director, 21CSLA State Center

New 21CSLA practice brief: Insights from California’s TK Educators and Leaders

This brief underscores key themes from UTK educational leaders as areas ripe for further research. Our findings highlight current pressing challenges and dilemmas facing UTK leaders and speak to the larger context in which UTK expands. We draw from semi-structured interviews with four California UTK leaders to illuminate the challenges, opportunities, and ingenuity of educators and districts in supporting UTK implementation and/or expansion. Read the brief.

Regional Academy Spotlight

Spotlight: Placer-Sacramento Regional Academy

As we rush toward the end of the first three-year cycle of 21CSLA Cohort 1, we are pleased to share that we are ending on a high note. We’ve had many great successes with highlights that include: Creation of a strong and effective regional structure that supported shared leadership, visioning, and facilitation of program development that has established 21CSLA as the premier leadership development program in the region; and  development and implementation of our guiding principles and frameworks including the SCOE 21CSLA Leadership Pillars and our leadership framework, Five Key Practices of Effective School and District Leaders. Spotlight: San Diego/Riverside Regional Academy

As we enter the second part of the school year, our Regional Academy has been focusing heavily on building partnerships in our region to support the 21CSLA work. One of these partnerships is the K–12 Math Leadership Book Study with Dr. Kyndall Brown. The Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE) initially requested this work because one of their priorities for the year is  to support leaders in fostering equitable math instruction. Together we co-planned the launch of their RCOE math collaborative — school and teacher leaders who meet regularly to discuss their problem of practices around implementing equitable math instruction. The  "Choosing to See: A Framework for Equity in the Math Classroom" book study series was the launchpad and glue for this math collaborative in its first year. Read more.
