APRIL 2024

From the directors

Dear friends and colleagues,

Last month, members from the 21CSLA State Center and Regional Academies along with esteemed guests gathered at UCLA for the fourth biannual retreat to delve into the crucial connection between equity leadership and community voice. The Spring Collective Retreat included engaging activities, including guest speakers, leadership panels, group discussions, collaborative activities, learning walks, and breakout sessions.

The retreat, which brought together 75 participants both onsite and virtually, was a rich tapestry of community voices and perspectives. Insights emphasized the importance of active listening, amplifying voices, and nurturing trust to build schools that serve all communities.

As one participant observed:
As humans, it’s essential that we possess the ability to actively engage and listen with depth and discernment, leading to genuine and true conversations. There is a productive energy from being still and listening that can become a valuable tool for fostering equity.
We extend our gratitude to all who contributed to this event’s success. Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate reconvening at UC Berkeley in Fall 2024 for our next retreat. In the meantime, we invite you to delve deeper into the highlights of our Spring Collective Retreat.

Warmly,

Dr. Rebecca Cheung Director, 21CSLA State Center
Dr. Jabari Mahiri Chair, 21CSLA Leadership Board
Dr. Kim Wallace Associate Director, 21CSLA State Center
