FEBRUARY 2024

From the directors

Dear friends and colleagues,

This month we’re celebrating each of the seven 21CSLA Regional Academies for their innovative contributions to the TK–12 educational leadership field. In late January, Center and RA leads met to check in on progress made during the first half of Cohort 2 Year 1 and the conversations were meaningful, rich, and inspiring. The leaders’ individual and collective commitments to developing locally responsive offerings, honing their coaching for equity models, and hosting unique communities of practice speaks volumes about their commitment to continuous improvement practices. This willingness to try out novel concepts and craft learning experiences that authentically engage teacher-leaders and school and district administrators is a true hallmark of the 21CSLA way of being. Join us in thanking our RA leads for the work that they do on behalf of students, staff, and families throughout California.

Warmly,

Dr. Rebecca Cheung Director, 21CSLA State Center
Dr. Jabari Mahiri Chair, 21CSLA Leadership Board
Dr. Kim Wallace Associate Director, 21CSLA State Center
News and Events

Today! Join us for a Research-Practice Webinar on sidelining bias in schools

Our next webinar will feature Dr. Jason Okonofua on the topic of sidelining bias in schools, and will introduce an alternative approach to combating bias—one that begins with the presumption that people are inherently complex, with multiple, often contradictory, selves and goals. How then can we alter situations to bring out our better selves? Using both classic and contemporary examples, we show how sidelining bias has led to meaningful improvements in real-world outcomes, including reduced school suspensions. The webinar will take place on Thursday, February 1, 3:30–4:30 pm PST. All webinars are free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. Learn more and register for the webinar.

New webinar highlights brief: How teacher diversity supports diverse students and families in early childhood education

Our newest brief on student and teacher diversity shares highlights from our recent webinar addressing how teacher-child racial/ethnic match may affect child and family experiences in early childhood education, how policy shapes the diversity of the early education workforce, and how leaders can think about cultivating spaces that support diverse children and families.

Video: Panel discussion on school improvement and research-practice partnerships

Moderated by Bruce Fuller (Professor, Berkeley School of Education), the event was held in person and livestreamed. Jabari Mahiri (Professor, BSE; Chair, 21CSLA Leadership Board) and Eos Trinidad (Professor, BSE) made opening and closing remarks. Watch the recording.
