JANUARY 2023

From the directors

Dear friends and colleagues,

21CSLA turns three this spring! Like the field of education at large, we have learned so much through pandemic times and stayed focused on supporting California's leaders through high-quality, equity-centered professional learning opportunities.

On May 11, 2023, Regional Academy leads, State Center leads, the California Department of Education (CDE), State Board of Education (SBE), California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE), and many other associated partners will gather together in Sacramento for the first 21CSLA showcase and celebration highlighting the incredible projects launched and executed during the first round of the grant. Thank you to everyone who has participated and helped us spread the word about 21CSLA in the past and into the future.

Warmly,

Dr. Rebecca Cheung Director, 21CSLA State Center
Dr. Jabari Mahiri Chair, 21CSLA Leadership Board
Dr. Kim Wallace Associate Director, 21CSLA State Center

Regional Academy Spotlights

21CSLA Regional Academy Spotlight: Alameda Regional Academy

Focus on equity and inclusion for our most marginalized and underserved leaders

In the Alameda Regional Academy, we are focused on students in our region who are marginalized and underserved as well as leaders who are marginalized because of their racial identity. We began this work in 2020 by launching the African American Male Leaders Network (AAMLN)—see photo above from the most recent gathering. The need to deepen our work toward justice to support these leaders in the unique challenges they face was highlighted by the social movement sparked by George Floyd’s murder. With the success of the AAMLN, we were inspired to hold discussion groups at our Leading for Justice Summit in June of 2022 to determine interest for Latino, Latina, and AAPI affinity groups. The discussion groups generated positive responses and in fall 2022, we launched the Latino Leaders Network. In January 2023, we are launching the Asian American Pacific Islander Leaders Network. Additionally we look forward to starting an affinity group for Latina leaders. Read the full spotlight.
