MARCH 2024

From the directors

Dear friends and colleagues,

Last week, members of our 21CSLA State Center and Regional Academies convened at the California State System of Support (SOS) Collaborative Meeting and the Curriculum and Improvement Support Committee (CISC) Leadership Symposium in Monterey, California. We connected with leaders across the state who share our commitment to transforming schools and discussed ways in which we can align our efforts to better achieve equity and justice. 21CSLA also hosted a mixer and delivered two presentations on inquiry-based instructional models and UTK’s family and community engagement module.

During the conference, we had the privilege of hearing from Dr. Gholdy Muhammad, keynote speaker and esteemed author of Unearthing Joy: A Guide to Culturally and Historically Responsive Teaching and Learning, who posed thought-provoking questions highlighting the importance of investing in the leadership of our schools:
How do we use the genius of the past to better educate children of today? What would happen if we designed schools to cultivate joy? What happens when we lead geniuses? We treat them as human beings. Then we love them.
We deeply appreciate California leaders for investing in 21CSLA to support school leaders who uphold our equity promise. Dr. Muhammad’s message resonates deeply and reminds us that it is through collective efforts that we become more whole and complete. Thank you to all those involved.

Warmly,

Dr. Rebecca Cheung Director, 21CSLA State Center
Dr. Jabari Mahiri Chair, 21CSLA Leadership Board
Dr. Kim Wallace Associate Director, 21CSLA State Center
