NOVEMBER 2023
From the directors
Dear friends and colleagues,
Collaboration. Connections. Partnerships. This month we are pleased to highlight some activities and events that took place in October that illustrate 21CSLA’s commitment to the wider TK–12 community. The State Center convened our first Advisory Council meeting last month, bringing together educational leaders from a variety of organizations and agencies to help us forge new relationships during Cohort 2—all with the intent of better serving California's school and district leaders. Last week, we were honored to co-host a Learning Exchange Event called “Showcasing Education Innovation and Research for Students Experiencing Homelessness” at UC Berkeley alongside the Center for Cities + Schools, the California Department of Education, and several other contributors. We look forward to future opportunities that align with our commitment to advancing equity for youth and families and our mission to develop equity-centered leaders around the state. We invite like-minded potential partners to reach out to us to develop future offerings, and to join us in promoting peace and humanity through the power of education.
Warmly,
Dr. Rebecca Cheung Director, 21CSLA State Center
Dr. Jabari Mahiri Chair, 21CSLA Leadership Board
Dr. Kim Wallace Associate Director, 21CSLA State Center

Mid-State (Tulare) Regional Academy
The 21CSLA Mid-State Regional Academy presented UTK Module 2 on September 18 and 19, 2023 to Merced County educational leaders.
This module, titled “Leaders Envisioning Equitable TK Classrooms in Action,” was organized by the Mid-State UTK Regional Team and hosted by the Merced County Office of Education.
During Module 2, educational leaders had the opportunity to delve into research and standards related to high-quality developmentally appropriate instruction. They identified specific “look-fors” in Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classrooms, which aimed to enhance their instructional leadership in implementing California’s UTK.
Feedback from the event was positive, with principals expressing newfound understanding of the importance of play in early education. They emphasized the need for their teachers to also receive training in this area. Additionally, it was noted that kindergarten teachers could benefit from training related to vertical teaming and P–3 alignment. Participants appreciated the focus on intentional play and valued the time allocated for discussion with their colleagues.
Following this successful event, Module 3 is scheduled for January 2024 in Merced County and Module 4 is planned for June 2024. Modules will also be delivered in Madera and Stanislaus Counties this spring, further expanding the reach of this valuable educational initiative.
