MAY 2024

From the directors

Dear friends and colleagues,

As we approach the end of the academic year and the start of summer, we send our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the dedicated educators in TK–12 public education. Thank you for choosing to serve during difficult times. We also extend thanks to our 21CSLA partners and colleagues. Your dedication to implementing courageous school leadership, investing in effective solutions, and addressing inequity in our schools serves as a beacon of inspiration to us all.

A special acknowledgment goes to the 21CSLA State Center Advisory Council, composed of California educational leaders whose invaluable support has enhanced cross-organizational communication across state-wide initiatives and connected 21CSLA to current projects and scholarship. We appreciate your commitment to our collective work and contributions to elevating and improving our work across 21CSLA.

Here’s to a collaborative and enriching year ahead. May you find time to rest and reflect this summer on your great work and accomplishments, which have played a vital role in making this state a better place for all students.

Warmly,

Dr. Rebecca Cheung Director, 21CSLA State Center
Dr. Jabari Mahiri Chair, 21CSLA Leadership Board
Dr. Kim Wallace Associate Director, 21CSLA State Center

21CSLA leaders present, learn, and network at last month’s AERA Annual Meeting

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) 2024 Annual Meeting, held last month in Philadelphia, provided a valuable opportunity for leaders within 21CSLA to cultivate professional connections, discover the latest research, and engage with prominent research scholars. As we reflect on the significance of this year’s theme, “Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call To Action,” we acknowledge that introducing discussions on race to an academic audience, especially amidst ongoing challenges to DEI work, is no small task. We are grateful for the willingness of AERA members to enter into sometimes uncomfortable dialogue and look forward to working together to change hearts and minds. This work is, after all, as Dr. Tyrone Howard said, “about the kids.” Let us keep sight of our objectives and continue to advance knowledge, promote dialogue, and shape the future direction of education.
